100% Pure New Zealand Merino Wool.
Ashford is proud to have its very own Mackenzie yarn. It is 100% pure New Zealand with the wool grown on high country sheep farms around New Zealand and the yarn spun in a small boutique mill in Hawkes Bay. It is a soft 4 ply machine washable yarn perfect for knitting and weaving.
The yarn is named after the Mackenzie Basin, near Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo, where the Merino sheep thrive in the dry conditions and high altitude. The Basin was named in the 1850s after James MacKenzie a Scottish shepherd who with his faithful collie dog, Friday, herded stolen sheep into this empty and isolated basin.
A bronze memorial to working collie dogs, such as Friday, stands on the shores of Lake Tekapo near the Church of the Good Shepherd.
