Woad Powder (Isatis tinctoria) is the historic blue of Europe, especially England until it was replaced by the abundant, cheaper, and darker blue of indigo from India (Indigofera tinctoria). Commercial woad powder was nonexistent from the 1930s until a brief French revival in the 1990s–2000s. Woad was produced during this revival. It is a vat dye with a process identical to indigo; all indigo methods and recipes work well with woad.

Today Woad remains a popular dye for the very special blue it produces. We can see it used to dye textiles, as a paint, and as a colourant for soap
